Foundry Art Centre - Totuskey Grainery Oils

For those of you that won't be able to make it to the show . . . this is a shot of a series of panels I did from my sister's photos taken one very foggy morning of what was left of the Totuskey Grainery on the Northern Neck of VA.

The opening is this evening and it will be very cold, but at least the snow is holding off until this weekend.  What happened to Fall?

I went to The Foundry Art Centre this AM to see how Melissa and M.J. hung my upcoming show of oil paintings in the Ameristar Gallery. The opening reception is from 6 - 8PM tomorrow night and is free and open to the public.  (This photo may look a bit distorted . . . the wall has a slight curve to it so that presents some challenges.)

Sunset at the Crab Place (Oil on Panel)

Well I do paint on occasion and this is a familiar scene. Much of the time I work from photos taken by my sister, Kathryn. This crab place is close to her house on the Northern Neck of Virginia. 

For some reason when I uploaded this photo to my blog the purple looks much more saturated than it is in the painting and the transition from purple to the peachy color should appear much more subtle. Hmmm . . .  This little painting was done on an ampersand hardbord panel measuring 10" x 8".

Beyond Violet with the Emperor Scorpion

Diane Papageorge and I were pleasantly surprised to find out that we each had some artwork selected for the upcoming show "Beyond Violet with the Emperor Scorpion".  (Interesting title for a show).  Washington University invited local alum, current faculty, graduate and undergrad students to submit work.  The opening is Friday Feb. 21 from 6-9PM at Des Lee Gallery which is located at 1627 Washington Avenue. The show will be up through March 22nd.

Turquoise Skiff in the Mist (Oil on Panel)

I have been working on this painting off and on for the past couple of months.  I think I finally got it to a point that I can live with.  I have worked with similar image in the past, but prefer the misty version. This little painting was done on an ampersand hardbord panel measuring 10" x 8".

Tranquility

As I try to get back into painting I thought I would work with an older image that I attempted in the past.  Long ago I did a square version of this misty landscape.  The scanner picked up more orange than I see when looking at this in natural light.  I may need to go back in and change a couple of things.  I worked on an ampersand hardbord panel measuring 10" x 8".

Fall Sunlight on the Rappahannock (Oil on Panel)

I originally saw a version of this photo as a horizontal and had printed it out and was planning on painting it at some point. When my sister, Kathryn, posted the cropped version it definitely reminded me that I still wanted to do something with the image. So this is something I finished rather quickly a week ago. I liked each stage as I went along. That's usually a good sign. I guess the image has all the right elements going for it including the dramatic lights and darks.

This oil on panel measures 12" x 12".

Boat with Turquoise Trim (Oil on Panel)

Well it's about time I posted a new painting. I have been working on four paintings. One is a disaster and I don't think it will ever be solved. I may just have to sand it off and start over . This painting, however, was created from an award-winning photo shot by my sister, Kathryn. I hope the painting lives up to the photo. This is painted on a cradled panel that measures 16" x 24".

Fall Reflection (Oil Painting on Panel)

Well I have started painting again and I obviously decided to work with a pretty abstract image. I don't think I am done, but I thought I would put this up to have something new on the page for a change. This is taken from another one of my sister's wonderful photos. It is painted on a gessoed ampersand hardbord panel which measures 8" x 10".

I worked on this painting this past summer and felt like it was never finished.  I like the darker shadows in the bottom image.  One of these days I may go back in and work on the shadows in the top image.  We shall see.

Still Life with Spirals - 36" x 48" Oil on Canvas

I was very happy to be notified that this painting was accepted to the upcoming show "Painting: The Artful Palette" at the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, MO.  The opening is from 6-9PM on August 27th.

Squash Soufflé

This is a great, relatively easy way to use up some of that summer squash and zucchini you have an abundance of.  This recipe is from "The Vegetarian Feast" by Martha Rose Shulman - a great cookbook.

1 1/2 lbs summer squash

1 TBSP salt (preferably sea salt)

1/2 onion

1 TBSP plus 2 tsp olive oil

4 eggs, beaten

1/4 cup grated cheddar or gruyére cheese

1/2 cup cottage cheese

1/2 cup whole-wheat bread crumbs

2 TBSP chopped fresh parsley (I prefer fresh basil)

Freshly ground pepper, to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Grate Squash ( I use grater disc with food processor) and toss with salt.  Let sit for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, saute the onion in 2 tsp of the olive oil until tender.  Combine with the beaten eggs, grated cheese, cottage cheese, bread crumbs, parsley and the salt and pepper to taste.

Squeeze out the excess water from the squash and rinse well.  Squeeze in a towel to dry, then stir into the egg-cheese mixture.  Turn into an oiled 1-quart casserole or souffle dish.  Drizzle the remaining 1 TBSP oilve oil over the top and bake for 45 minutes.

Des Peres Snowfall (Landscape Oil Painting)

I guess when it is hot outside I have to try and put myself someplace else.  This past winter I shot a number of photos early one morning as the sun was coming up.  The trees caused such a wonderful luminous pattern on the snow.  The photos have been sitting around for a time, but I finally did something with one of them.  This painting measures 8" x 10" and is painted on a gessoed ampersand panel.
